Oregairu- A not so typical romcom anime
What if everything we were told about youth being the best time of our lives was a lie? What if the social dynamics of high school were less about finding your place and more about surviving in a world of facades? Enter Oregairu, an anime that doesn’t romanticize youth—it deconstructs it, laying bare the harsh realities of adolescence in a way few shows dare to. When I first watched Oregairu(also known as My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU), I expoected a typical romcom: typical awkward protagonist, wierd friends, romantic triangle. However Oregairu explores human relationships, social dynamics and the strugles of youth.
Hachimen Hickigaya ,the progonist, is not your typical protagonist where he seeks acceptence rather he is anti social, cynical and brutally honest. Hachimen embraces solitude and observes how shallow high school social life is. In high school it often felt like a game of fitting in. Watching hachimen choose being himself over putting on a mask was amazing even if it meant him being isolated.
A typical romcom anime involves couple of teenagers choosing over eachother leading to a love triangle. Oregairu breaks the usual genre tropes . the series highlights the emotional distance and complexities between each characters. It doesn't focus on who will end up with eachother rather navigating emotional barriers and bulding emotional connections despite personal flaws.
This nuanced potrayal of relationships among hachimen and his two female friends Yukino and Yui hit home for me. They are filled with insecurities, pride and unspoken feelings. The show's message is clear: connection takes effort and vulnerability.
The show tries potray every kind of teen facing through their problems and finding their unique identity. Here you will see two faced person, hopeless romantic guys, toxic friends backstabbing and much more.
the show is absolutely phenomenal with lovely voice acting and music as well as great animation, all of which lets you really enjoy and immerse yourself in the story. The story itself is quite great with the character development and the emotions being something that one cannot really describe but experience. The feelings, the love. It’s all there. The ending is a hopeful one and one that can be pleasing to all, it ends with problems solved. A must watch for teens who’ve struggled with emotions and connection before or have hated themselves and really anyone who wants to watch some shows with genuine emotions. I really recommend Oregairu to everyone with no restrictions.
