The Gen-Z of Bangladesh: The New Makers of the Country

People who are born between 1997-2013 are called Generation Z and are known for their distinct characteristics shaped by technological advancement and socio political changes. Gen-Z is the first generation to have grown up with widespread internet access from childhood. In our country there was a conception that the gen z generation is tech-addicted, they do not care much about what is happening in the country. But the rebirth of Bangladesh has proved this perception wrong. This generation has proved their love for their motherland.

As we all know, Bangladesh became independent in 1971 after defeating Pakistan in the liberation war. But Bangladesh became independent for the second time after the downfall of the fascist government who were ruling the country for 16 years. Bangladesh became independent for the second time on 05 August, 2024. The story of the rebirth of Bangladesh which is also known as Bangladesh 2.0 started in June, 2024 when some university students started protesting for quota reformation. However, the government treated the students brutally for asking for their rights and protesting. Later, this protest turned into a mass rising of the people of the whole country.

Dhaka University students created a central coordinator team comprising 6 members. Then a sub-coordinator team was created in every public university to peacefully run the quota movement countrywide, which started in June 2024. The former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not want to reform the quota rather she called the protesting students ‘Rajakar’ which hurt the sentiment of the whole nation. With time the participation of students in the quota movement increased and the fascist government attacked the student’s peaceful movement using the police force. They injured many innocent students to stop the movement. At that time, the students of the whole country started getting united and protesting against the attack in the student’s peaceful movement. The cunning fascist government decided to close all the public universities and their dormitory so that the students could not stay united and continue their movement.

At this crucial time, when public university students were almost helpless, the private university students came forward to carry the protest forward. When public university students were forced to leave their dormitories, private university students started coming on the roads and protesting against the government’s oppression of the students. On July 16, the wonder boy of our nation, Abu Sayed took part in the movement at his university in Rangpur and got shot by a police officer which left the whole nation shocked. Then on July 17, the fascist government ordered the police to attack Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University. As a result, many students were shot and brutally injured. On 18 July, all private universities stood together to protest against the government’s attack on students. This time fascist government ordered to attack on private universities. Consequently, thousands of students died. The death toll is still unknown. The final nail to the coffin was the government’s intentional internet shutdown in the whole country from 18 July to 24 July to hide the massacre the government had created. But the protest still went on in all the parts of the country. The fascist government killed and arrested innocent people countlessly.

By the end of July, the quota reformation movement turned into a war against the fascist government regime because of its brutal activity against the innocent people of Bangladesh. As a result, central 6 coordinators called for a “Long march to Dhaka” on August 05 to barricade. Prime Minister’s house. Fascist Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina having no other way resigned and flew away to India. Bangladesh gained victory for the second time. This long journey started with the students only Generation Z but ended with the general people of Bangladesh who selflessly came forward to protect their motherland.

The Gen-Z were fearless, they didn’t care about their life but cared for the country, for the nation. After the fascist govt. regime’s downfall, police stations were empty. At that time, gen-z started doing the duties of the police. They started controlling traffic on the road. They started protecting minority people such as Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists. They started monitoring the market to prevent price hikes. In short, they started reforming their motherland and also two students from the central coordinator team have become the advisers of the interim government which has happened for the first time in the history of Bangladesh. Gen-zs are now a part of the government which has created a very good combination of experience and youthfulness in the new government.

The role of generation-z in achieving the victory of Bangladesh for the second time and in reforming the country is undeniable. According to the gen-z, the new victory day of Bangladesh is on 36 July (05 August). The students and general people who lost their lives in this protest are the national martyrs. This generation should keep their work going on to develop the country. The next generation will have so many things to learn from generation-z.
